किसी भी प्रकार का शोध किसी न किसी उद्देश्य का अनुगामी होता है। अतः यह बात स्पष्ट है कि अनुसन्धान उद्देश्यविहीन हो ही नहीं सकता। इस प्रकार अनुसन्धान के विषय में कहा जा सकता है कि,
  • अनुसन्धान नवीन तथ्यों की खोज करता है। 
  • पुराने तथ्यों की जाँच तथा मूल्यांकन करता है। 
  • किसी विशेष स्थिति का सही निर्णय कर समस्याओं का समाधान करता है। 
सामान्यतः अनुसन्धान के उद्देश्यों को चार भागों में बाँटा गया है-
  1. सैद्धान्तिक उद्देश्य 
  2. सत्यात्मक उद्देश्य 
  3. तथ्यात्मक उद्देश्य 
  4. व्यवहारिक उद्देश्य 
1. सैद्धान्तिक उद्देश्य
सैद्धान्तिक उद्देश्यों के अन्तर्गत वैज्ञानिक विधियों को शामिल किया जाता है।
वैज्ञानिक विधियों के माध्यम से नवीन सिद्धान्तों एवं नियमों का प्रतिपादन किया जाता है।
सैद्धान्तिक उदेश्य पूर्ति के लिए किए गए कार्य व्याख्यात्मक प्रकृति के होते है।
2.   सत्यात्मक उद्देश्य
सत्यात्मक उद्देश्य दार्शनिक प्रकृति के होते है, जिनमें दर्शन के आधार पर अन्तिम परिणाम की प्राप्ति की जाती है।
3.   तथ्यात्मक उद्देश्य
तथ्यात्मक उद्देश्य वर्णात्मक प्रकृति के होते है, क्योंकि इनकी प्राप्ति विश्लेषण आधारित होती है।
इसमें ऐतिहासिक अनुसन्धानों का सहारा लिया जाता है।
4.   व्यवहारिक उद्देश्य
व्यवहारिक उद्देश्यों को विकसात्मक अनुसन्धान की श्रेणी में रखा जाता है तथा इसकी प्राप्ति हेतु विभिन्न क्षेत्रों में क्रियात्मक अनुसन्धान का सहारा लिया जाता है।
इन उद्देश्यों की प्राप्ति के लिए केवल उपयोगिता को महत्व दिया जाता है।

अनुसन्धान या शोध वह क्रमबद्ध वैज्ञानिक प्रक्रिया है, जिसमें वैज्ञानिक उपकरणों के प्रयोग के द्वारा वर्तमान ज्ञान का परिमार्जन किया जाता है। शोध का क्षेत्र बहुत व्यापक है फिर भी शोध की प्रकृति को निम्नलिखित आधार बिन्दुओं के द्वारा समझा जा सकता है-
  • अनुसन्धान अपनी प्रकृति में वस्तुनिष्ठ और तथ्यात्मक होता है। 
  • शोध मूलतः वैज्ञानिक प्रकृति का होता है, जिसमें प्राथमिक एवं द्वितीयक स्रोतों से प्राप्त आँकड़ों का विश्लेषण कर निष्कर्ष प्राप्त किया जाता है। 
  • इसकी प्रकृति बौद्धिकता से युक्त एवं तार्किक होती है, जो पुरानी त्रुटियों को शुद्ध कर नए-नए ज्ञान एवं सिद्धान्तों को स्थापित करती है। 
  • अनुसन्धान पूर्वाग्रहों से मुक्त और व्यक्तिपरक होता है। 
  • अनुसन्धान अपनी प्रकृति में नवीनता को प्रदर्शित करता है, क्योंकि इसके द्वारा प्राचीन तथ्य, सिद्धान्त, विधि आदि में परिवर्तन कर नए तथ्यों, सिद्धान्तों और विधियों की खोज होती है।

शोध अथवा अनुसंधान का सामान्य अर्थ “खोज करना” है।
यह खोज किसी उद्देश्य को आधार बनाकर क्रमबद्ध, व्यवस्थित और वैज्ञानिक तरीकों से की जाती है।
शोध को इंग्लिश में Research कहते है, जिसका सामान्य अर्थ,-        “पुनः खोज करना” है।
शोध किसी न किसी समस्या के वैज्ञानिक या तार्किक समाधान के रूप में सामने आता है, क्योंकि समाधान के पश्चात उस समस्या या खोज से जुड़े कुछ नवीन सिद्धांत या अवधारणाएं सामने आती है।

प्रश्नावली को जटिल व प्रासंगिक मुद्दे आधारित बनाकर मूल्यांकन करना । इसमें उन मुद्दों को शामिल करना , जिससे शिक्षार्थी प्रभावित होते हैं । इससे शिक्षार्थी की बौद्धिकता तथा उद्देश्यों दोनों का मूल्यांकन सम्भव है । शिक्षार्थी या बच्चों को साक्षात्कार के माध्यम से मूल्यपरक मूल्यांकन कर , इस समूह में विद्यार्थियों को शामिल कर व प्रश्नों को पूछकर भी मूल्यांकन किया जा सकता है , जिससे बौद्धिकता के आत्मविश्वास को बढ़ावा मिलेगा और शिक्षण मूल्यांकन भी सकारात्मक होगा । विद्यार्थियों से किसी पत्र के बारे में जानकर और उनका उस पर पक्ष जानकर भी बौद्धिकता को मापा जा सकता है । ऐसे ही किसी अन्य घटना को उनके प्रोजेक्ट कार्य में समाहित कर भी शिक्षण प्रक्रिया में मूल्यांकन को प्रभावी बनाया जा सकता है । शिक्षण कार्य को दृश्यपरक तन्त्रों की सहायता से एक प्रकार से रुचिकर बनाकर , नवीन तकनीकों को सहायक सामग्री बनाकर , शिक्षार्थी की रुचि को पैदाकर शिक्षण में योगदान को बढ़ाकर , तुलनात्मक परियोजनाओं , कार्यकुशलताओं एवं व्यक्तिगत प्रभाव डालकर भी शिक्षण प्रक्रिया में मूल्यांकन को प्रभावी बनाया जा सकता है । शिक्षण में शिक्षार्थी के लक्ष्य उन्मुखी प्रयोजनों के माध्यम से भी मूल्यांकन किया जा सकता है । इस प्रकार वर्तमान में नवीन तकनीकों ; जैसे - ऑडियो - वीडियो द्वारा संचालित तकनीकी , कम्प्यूटर आधारित तकनीकों , व्यक्तिगत प्रभावों आदि का उपयोग मूल्यांकन को प्रभावी बनाने में किया जा सकता है ।

कम्प्यूटर आधारित जाँच डिजिटल संसाधनों के माध्यम से होती है । इसमें इण्टरनेट आधारित कम्प्यूटर पर जाँच होती है । इसके साथ ही इण्टरनेट वातावरण में ही इसका मूल्यांकन भी होता है । कम्प्यूटर आधारित जाँच में विद्यार्थी को यूजर आईडी और पासवर्ड आवण्टित किया जाता है । यह पूर्व व्यवस्थित कम्प्यूटर के सॉफ्टवेयर में दर्ज भी होता है । जाँच के समय विद्यार्थी निर्धारित जाँच केन्द्र पर पहुँचकर जाँच देता है । इसमें विद्यार्थी यूजर आईडी और पासवर्ड की सहायता व निर्देशित मानक के अनुरूप निर्धारित समय हेतु परीक्षा प्रारम्भ करता है ।
जाँच प्रारम्भ होते ही समय की गणना प्रारम्भ हो जाती है । इसमें अगले प्रश्न तथा सेव करने हेतु ' सेव एण्ड नेक्स्ट बटन ' का प्रयोग करना होता है । इसमें भिन्न रंगों के बटनों का भी उपयोग होता है , जो यह बताते हैं कि आपने कितना प्रश्न किया , कितना बाकी है आदि । जाँच समाप्त होते ही सबमिट बटन का प्रयोग करना होता है , जिससे आपकी जाँच प्रति कम्प्यूटर के सॉफ्टवेयर में सेव हो जाती है । सबमिट बटन के प्रयोग के बाद कम्प्यूटर की स्क्रीन पर जाँच का विवरण आ जाता है , जिसमें यह विवरण होता है कि आपने कितने प्रश्न किए , कितने छोड़े आदि ।
कम्प्यूटर आधारित जाँच का मूल्यांकन 
कम्प्यूटर आधारित जाँच का मूल्यांकन कम्प्यूटर में सॉफ्टवेयर के माध्यम से होता है । जाँच का मूल्यांकन कम समय में हो जाता है । छात्र भी सन्तुष्ट होता है , उसका विवरण उसे खण्डवार कम समय में मिल जाता है । छात्रो की संख्या की अधिकता का इस पर दबाव नहीं पड़ता है । मूल्यांकन में त्रुटियों की सम्भावना कम होती है ।
पारदर्शिता को बढ़ावा मिलता है । एकसाथ अधिक विद्यार्थियों की जाँच सम्भव है । विद्यार्थी द्वारा माँगी गई जाँच रिपोर्ट की पूर्ति एवं पुन : मूल्यांकन में आसान होती है ।
